The idea of getting insight on how the purge began and what would make America agree to such a thing was an interesting idea. Unfortunately, that part of the movie fell short for me. Marisa Tomei’s character was bland and poorly written and honestly poorly played by her. The entire movie was one big political statement, but I am okay with that. In my opinion the entire series has been political commentary and this one just was a bit more in your face. Many will likely be put off by that and some conservatives will likely take offense, but other than the “pussy grabbing” comment I see it as a commentary about class and poverty which everyone should understand despite its left leaning political stance.
Aside from all that, I really liked the film. I have been a fan of the series and I thought this did the series justice. Was it the best? No, but it wasn’t the worst either. The action was good, and once it got to the towers, much of it became really good. The gun play was solid all around and aside from a few instances (such as a guy dual wielding AKs like they were pistols in a John Woo movie) was fairly realistic compared to other action movies. The dialogue could have been better and the characters more developed, but that isn’t what I was expecting so I wasn’t disappointed. Overall this was a fun movie and delivered what I wanted from a Purge movie.
