I am a big Star Wars fan. I loved the original movies growing up, but I’m not a nostalgia fanboy who hates new Star Wars stuff. I loved Rouge One, The Force Awakens and even really liked The Last Jedi. That said, this movie is disappointing in nearly every way. I went back this week and rewatched it, hoping that time had made me appreciate it more, but I think it made it worse. Years ago I rated it a 7/10 which isn’t good because that is after my rose colored Star Wars bump. Now it is lucky to be a 5/10. I will admit there are many parts of the movie I like, but some are so cringy, it is too much to overlook. I am not original in my criticism of Jar Jar and young Anakin, but Christ are they unbearable. I haven’t seen the edit without Jar Jar in many years but I do remember that being much better. Perhaps I should seek it out again.
As much flack as the latest Star Wars movies have gotten, this movie is a great reminder of how Disney buying Lucasfilm was a great thing. The best thing about this movie is its appearance in the movie Fanboys.
Rating: 5 (with Star Wars bump)
Rewatchability: Low-Moderate (only rewatchable when marathoning the series)
