A classic film noir about a less than scrupulous private eye whose world turns upside down when he decides to pick up a female hitchhiker wearing nothing but a trench coat.
This is a pretty beloved film-noir and while I like it, I don’t think it was as good as it is made out to be. Perhaps I missed something, but I just didn’t find it engaging all the way through. The plot was all over the place and requires full attention to follow and even then, it was unnecessarily convoluted. The saving grace was the variety of characters. They fit a lot of interesting ones in this film and most were played quite well for this type of movie. Hammer’s secretary was a piece of work and needs some serious therapy.
Again, I don’t dislike the movie, but I wouldn’t recommend it to a normal movie watcher who doesn’t see as many movies as me. There are better classics and better film-noir movies out there to spend time watching.
