Everything about this movie should make me hate it, but I can’t help but admit it is awesome. It has singing and dancing-I generally hate singing and dancing. It is an ancient times period piece-I usually can’t stand those. It has some bad CGI, which generally annoys me, and it has romantic parts which I don’t like. Despite all that, I love it. I even love all those things. Sure, the CGI is bad, and the action scenes are sometimes laughable, but this movie has just the right amount of bat-shit crazy to not only forgive the bad, but to actually love the bad. I don’t want to say it was one of those “it’s so bad it’s good” movies, because it really is well made. Aside from the at times high school level CGI, the movie is pretty.
One thing that did annoy me was the change of speed in many of the shots. This movie used slow motion more than a teenager who just got their first iPhone. They slow down EVERYTHING. If they just ran the thing at normal speed it would have shaved probably 20 minutes from the runtime. Then in the second half of the movie they started speeding up the action scenes. That technique can be used effectively, but this looked more like the Keystone Cops. This issue didn’t ruin the movie for me, but it took at least a star from my rating.
Rewatchability: Moderate-high (would be high if not for the long runtime)
