Cannonball is a movie about the cross country illegal race. It shares the same premise and nearly the same name with the ever more popular The Cannonball Run which came out five years later. Cannonball was made in the 70s and everything about it gives that away and it isn’t just the cars and clothing. The fight choreography is terrible which is typical for a lot of American movies made before 1985 or so, and the direction just looked like a bad 70s movie. Even the driving and car action scenes were filmed terribly and from awkward angles. One of the things that made The Cannonball Run so enjoyable was the comedy and comedic actors. This movie had none of that and was in fact far darker. I will give it credit for the unforgiving accidents though. In most movies when someone crashes they get out and walk away no matter how bad the accident. Not here. If you get in a bad accident, there is a good chance you will die.
When I learned about this movie, I wondered why I hadn’t heard of it since I like the Carradines and loved the Cannonball Run movies. After watching it I understand why. Everyone just wanted to forget it existed.
