I definitely seem to be in the minority with this film because I liked it a lot. The general consensus seems to be that it is below average with (at the time of this writing) an IMDB rating of 4.8/10, Letterboxd of 2.4/5 and TMDB of 42%. I get that it isn’t winning any Oscars, but I found it entertaining and fun.
Gabrielle Union turned in a good performance and while her character was a bit more badass than a typical normal person would be, they didn’t make her Liam Neeson either. She held her own against the men a few times, but the film also kept the strength difference between someone her size and some of the men. While some of the twists and turns were predictable, there were a few surprises which kept it fresh. The filmmakers weren’t trying to reinvent the genre, but instead make a solid thriller which I feel they did. I also enjoyed that the female lead didn’t need to be saved by a man. While this isn’t a novel idea either, I find many times even with a powerful female character is undercut by a strong male.
Now for some of the bad. The young boy actor was bad. I know it isn’t easy to find kids his age who can act well, but his lines were so stiff. I didn’t like some of the final confrontation as I felt part of it was unnecessary. There were a few too many confrontations. They kept piling more and more on her which was a bit over the top. Also, why in the hell were there so many seconds of blank black screen before the credits?
