Why is the movie so funny? It is so over the top, it should flop hard, but it doesn’t. The jokes are childish and the characters are outlandish, and that is what makes it awesome. It doesn’t try to be high-brow and owns what it is, a low-brow sexual innuendo filled masterpiece. The screenplay has a bunch of funny situations and great lines, but the characters are what make it. Parodies are fun, but they are the best when they are like this, playing more like a funny tribute than a parody and that is what sets it apart. The fish out of water theme with Austin coming back 30 years later is fun, but isn’t overly relied on. Sure, it is the recurring theme, but the movie can work without it. This movie is over 20 years old and people (at least people my age) still reference the characters like Dr. Evil. That is a testament to how inventive and funny they were. Some of the actors such as Will Ferrell have very little screen time, but the script and their acting make the most out of every minute of it, showing how much care went into the writing.
