So the meteor is coming down and the hero and the new found love of his life (seriously why do they always find the girl when the world is ending) need to get out of town as quickly as possible. They begin running and while running away from the quickly approaching danger they inevitably start holding hands!
Have you ever tried this? It is nearly impossible to do without a lot of practice and incredibly ineffective. First we have to think of what they are trying to accomplish. They are trying to run away from danger and they are trying to make sure they stay together and they both are safe. Director after director decide that the only way to accomplish these things visually to have the hero and heroine run holding hands.
Does nobody on these sets realize that this prevents at least two of these things? You can’t run very fast while holding hands which means you will not be able to make it to safety. I mean couldn’t you just let the slowest runner go fist so the other one could run behind them to make sure they stay together. This would make it much more likely to make it to safety.
I get that movies aren’t usually supposed to be realistic and especially the end of the world movies, but come on. I know that these scenes are usually done to show the bond that the two characters are sharing but there has to be another way or even better just ditch the romantic love interest sub-plot altogether. I’m not sure exactly what audience they are trying to pander to, but I would bet that a good bit of the people that really love action movies aren’t huge fans of romantic movies. That is stereotyping a bit, but even if I am wrong would those people that love both be disappointed that the movie didn’t have both?
Solution – Leave romance out of action movies!
